Once again, it was down to an exciting finale as the coveted prizes of the SPA and wellness industry the European HEALTH & SPA AWARDs 2022 were presented for the 14th time! The awards, also known as the "Oscars of the industry", are the only independent awards in the health and wellness sector, and recognise Europe's best establishments for their special achievements. The gala took place on 29th November 2022 in Baden at the Congress Center. Numerous entrepreneurs travelled from Europe to celebrate the innovations.
The European HEALTH & SPA AWARDs are also a sign that tourism and regeneration are possible again, even if we still need time to reach the level of 2019. This applies especially to health tourism, which has been focusing on sustainability not only since the energy crisis! Employer branding and training of service staff, especially in the spa, is also very important in some resorts.
Once again, numerous renowned companies took part and successfully passed the demanding requirements. As every year, however, some failed the holistic criteria. Well, this should motivate further efforts in the future.
The guests were first welcomed with a glass of wine from the Josef Hintermayer Winery in front of a historic scenery in the Casineum at the Congress Center Baden. The festive ambience in the large ballroom with its atmospheric lighting, decoration, musical highlights and large stage was a worthy setting for the gala dinner. The tension rose as the good-humoured ORF presenter Olivia Peter opened the festivities.
Gala dinner
The 4-course gala dinner offered a variation of healthy ingredients that were light, starting with roasted pumpkin served on hummus with nuts and herb oil, followed by a classic old Viennese potato soup with vegetables and especially mushrooms. Before the prizes were given, a delicately roasted pike-perch on a lemon and thyme risotto followed, and fluffy curd cheese dumplings made the finale. The wine was accompanied by Grüner Veltliner, Chardonnay and Rheinriesling - fine wines from the Josef Hintermayer winery.
Music program
The musical highlight this time was provided by the Danny Ziemann Trio, who is the band leader and bass player, with the singer Valerie Costa and pianist Matyas Bartha. The American-Canadian jazz musician, who also teaches at the university in Graz, provided sophisticated and lively sounds from the genre of jazz. Very impressive was the passion and the ease with which difficult pieces were made to shine. The guests were enthusiastic.
Nominations and certificates
Despite the difficult general conditions also in 2022, nominees were presented to the audience at about 20:30, which also gave a first impression of how diverse and innovative the various submissions were. In order to score points at the European HEALTH & SPA AWARDs, it is necessary to reach a minimum number of points - winners need at least 30 points and in order to be nominated at all, 25 points are required.
For the first time, two certificates from 2021 were awarded at the gala evening, one in gold to FORESTIS Dolomites and one in silver to Ortner's Resort! The certificate holders also used the discussions during the certification to improve their management processes. For those interested, there is information on the website.
The eight evaluation criteria, such as health benefits, sustainability, economy, creativity, offer & service, design & technology played an important role. Corporate social responsibility, which includes measures for good working conditions for employees as well as social regional activities, is also important.
The nominations were in the categories Best SPA Manager, Best Destination SPA, Best Hotel SPA, Best Therme, Best Day-SPA, Best Medical Spa, Best Wellness Clinc (NEW), Best Signature Treatments as well as Best Technical and Best Cosmetic Product Innovation and the category "Best Spa Innovation".
Jury
The evaluation was carried out by a jury of experts and mystery testers in a two-stage procedure, among them were experts from business and the media. Since 2013, the points awarded have also been supplemented by "Brilliants", which are awarded if a certain number of points have been reached. According to this system, companies can receive 1 to 4 Brilliants, the number of Brilliants reflects the quality achieved in a very descriptive way.
The winners
At around 22:00, the eagerly awaited presentation of the awards in 12 categories began. The winners and placed came on stage and received their awards. The moderator of the event, Olivia Peter from ORF, and two jury members gave short laudatory speeches summarising the jury's assessments. The winners were then questioned about their submissions in an original and humorous way by Olivia Peter.
The trends in the health and wellness industry in demand were once again highlighted in a glamorous evening - the future guests of the hotels can once again look forward to new services and an increase in health benefits in the spa.
