The coveted awards of the wellness industry, the European HEALTH & SPA AWARDs, were held for the 13th time, despite all the difficulties of COVID-19 regulations. With mindfulness, a safe and glamorous event has been held. The so-called "Oscars of the sector" are the only independent awards in the health and wellness sector and recognize Europe's best companies for their special achievements. The gala took place on April 28, 2022. Numerous entrepreneurs traveled from Europe to celebrate the great innovations.

The European HEALTH & SPA AWARDs also sent out a signal that tourism and traveling is possible again - with certain rules to guarantee everyone's health. There were some challenges to overcome due to COVID-19 for the organizer of the awards, so the ceremony was a bit late, but it was held.

There were again many renowned companies that participated and also successfully passed the demanding requirements for the first time. However, as every year, some failed the holistic criteria.

The guests were first welcomed with a glass of prosecco in the Casineum at the Congress Center Baden. The festive ambience in the large ballroom with atmospheric lighting and a large stage was a worthy setting for the gala dinner. Gradually the tension increased and the good-humoured ORF presenter Olivia Peter opened the festivities.

Gala dinner
The gala dinner offered a variation of healthy ingredients that were light and wholesome to the palate, starting with smoked duck breast carpaccio served on a fennel citrus salad with walnut vinaigrette, followed by delicious lemongrass foam soup with crayfish on spit. The culinary highlight followed before the awards ceremony, a tender grilled fillet of pike-perch on paprika and tomato vegetables with creamy polenta, accompanied afterwards by a chocolate mousse with fresh mint and colourful berries. The accompaniment was Grüner Veltliner, Chardonnay and Rheinriesling - fine wines from the Josef Hintermayer winery.

Musical program
The musical supporting program this time was provided by a soloist on the piano Caroline Loibersbeck. She presented a variation of well-known hits, which elated the guests and contributed to a feel-good ambience.

34 Nominations
Despite the difficult framework conditions also in 2021 due to COVID-19, 34 nominees were presented to the audience at 20:30, which also gave a first impression of how innovative the various submissions were. In order to score points at the European HEALTH & SPA AWARDs it is necessary to reach a minimum number of points - winners need at least 30 points and in order to be nominated at all 25 points are necessary.

The eight evaluation criteria, such as health benefits, sustainability, economy, creativity, offer and service, played an important role. Corporate Social Responsibility, the measures for good working conditions for the employees, is also important. The nominations were made in the categories Best SPA Manager, Best Destination SPA, Best Hotel SPA, Best Thermal Bath, Best Day-SPA, Best Medical SPA, Best Signature Treatments as well as Best Technical and Best Cosmetic Product Innovation and the category "Best Spa Innovation".

Jury
The evaluation was carried out by a jury of experts and mystery testers in a two-stage procedure, among them were experts from business and the media. Since 2013, the points awarded have also been supplemented by "Brilliants", which are awarded once a certain number of points have been reached. According to this system, companies can receive 1 to 4 Brilliants; the number of Brilliants reflects the quality achieved in a very descriptive way.

The Winners
At 10 p.m. it was time for the much anticipated presentation of the awards in 11 categories, and of the winners. The moderator of the event, Olivia Peter from ORF, together with jury member Prof. Dr. Kai Illing, summarized the jury's assessments in short laudations. The winners were then questioned about their submissions in an original and humorous way by Olivia Peter.

The trends in the important health and wellness industry were once again highlighted in a glamorous evening - the future guests of the hotels can once again look forward to new services and an increase in health benefits in the spa.
