The European HEALTH & SPA AWARDs took place this year despite Corona, for also sending out a signal that tourism and travel are and should remain possible – with certain rules to guarantee the health of all. There were some challenges for the guests as well as for the organizer of the awards to overcome, because there were some completely new hurdles. This year will go down in history in many ways!
This year there were again numerous renowned companies that took part and some tried successfully meet the demanding requirements for the first time in 2020. As every year, however, some failed again due to the comprehensive criteria.
The guests gathered in the elegant Casineum in the Conges Center Baden and were welcomed with a glass of sparkling wine at the table. The festive ambience in the large ballroom with atmospheric lighting and large stage was a worthy setting for the gala dinner. The tension increased and the always elequnete and well-humoured ORF presenter Oliva Peter opened the festival in the lead of a small elephant.
Gala dinner
The 4-course gala dinner offered a variety of healthy ingredients that easily delighted the palate, such as a tiger shrimp and goat cheese with field salad and walnut oil, the nutmeg pumpkin soup was served with pumpkin seeds and farmer's bread. The culinary highlight followed before the award ceremony, a tender catfish with potatoes, smoked foam and roasted onions, followed by a delicious mango panna cotta, with coconut crumble and blueberry. Additional Grüner Veltliner, Chardonnay and Rheinriesling were offered – fine wines from the Josef Hintermayer winery.
Musical highlights
The musical supporting program was formed this time by a quartet who appeared in this formation for the first time and are all great jazz musicians. Above all, the velvety soft voice of Lisa Koloseus, a young yet unpolished jewel, accompanied by pianist Paul Temmel, who also plays in the band of James Cottriall, drummer Michael Seyfried and bassist Richard Messner, thrilled with a variety of demanding jazz standards and well-known hits.
39 nominations
Despite the difficult conditions of Covid-19 in 2020, 39 nominees were presented to the audience at 8:30 p.m., which gave a first impression of how innovative the various submissions were. In order to score at the European HEALTH & SPA AWARD it is necessary to achieve a minimum score – winners need at least 30 points and 25 points are required to be nominated at all. The eight evaluation criteria, such as health benefits, sustainability, cost-effectiveness, creativity, offer and service, play an important role. Corporate Social Responsibility, the measures for good working conditions for employees, is also important. Nominations were made in the categories Best SPA Manager, Best Destination SPA, Best Hotel SPA, Best Thermal Resort, Best Day SPA, Best Medical Spa, Best Signature Treatments as well as Best Technical and Best Cosmetic Product innovation and the Best Spa innovation.
Jury
The evaluation was carried out by a jury of experts and mystery testers, in a two-stage procedure, among them experts from business and the media. Since 2013, the points have also been supplemented by "brilliants", which are awarded from a certain number of points. Companies can get 1 to 4 brilliants under this system, the number of brilliants reflects the quality achieved in a very vivid way.
The winners
At 10 p.m. it was time and the long-awaited ceremony of the awards in 11 categories began, the winners were presented. The organizer of the event and head of the Agency for Health & Wellness, Norbert Hintermayer, summed up the jury evaluations with the jury member Kai Illing in short laudations. The winners were then interviewed in an original and humorous way by Olivia Peter about their submissions.
The trends in the great demanded health and wellness industry were again highlighted in a glamorous evening – the future guests of the hotels can look forward to new services and an increase in the health benefits in the spa.
